LIFE TO LIGHT FOR HOPE. L2LH

1. INTRODUCTION.

Life To Light for Hope in short is L2LH. Is a project that is designed in Kakuma refugee camp by young refugees with objective to get parents or caregivers and community leaders (camp block leaders, religious leaders, School teachers and block securities) together, inspire and empower one another through sharing early life experience, current opportunities and ideas that contribute to social change and development. The sharing sessions are led by our self-motivated volunteer staffs once in a month because of financial limitations. We start by community mobilization then move to brief training on leadership skills, public speaking, parenting styles, child rights and communicative English as the office language in Kenya and in many other countries of the world.

2. Brief Description.

Kakuma refugee camp is a community reach of cultures, beliefs, traditions, skills, knowledge and experience. It encompasses children, young and adult people from different countries bordering and not bordering Kenya, people who fled their countries because of political, Social and economic instability. The L2LH comes in existence with object to get the Kakuma resident organized and supported through open and free dialogue and information discrimination for better advocacy, integration and coexistence. Our community empowerment session happens upon Wings To Fly Initiative’s volunteers team plan and this is after community mobilization and information dissemination on parenting model, peace building and conflict resolution, human right concept, leadership and English communication skills. The project doesn’t discriminate anyone bit it social class and condition.

3. Activities:

- Community mobilization: The staff volunteers move into community blocks in camp to meeting women and men, young people and children to create awareness of Wings To Fly Initiative projects and program, collect challenges and success stories of our alumni. This help us understand the community needs and build trust and close relationship with people we serve.

 - Topics Facilitation session: We implement our dynamic curriculum in an engaging modality where by participant are given topics to discuss in buzzy groups for a given time then are invited to plenary sharing and discussion. Given our limited resources, this happens once in a month. We encourage open and health dialogue, conversation over a plan topic for everyone to feel free to shared, comment and give feedback. Doing this fosters unity, empathy and sympathy, culture exchange among the different people who are living here in the camp. For communicative English skills, this happen twice in a week for a period of Six months, from 2:00pm -4:00pm our local time.

- Community meetings, sharing and Dialogue: In a period of a term, Volunteer staff of the program organize as strategic visit to meet with program participants with a specific mission to follow up on the influence and impact of the program or project has had. This visit is also to motivate them since it is organized in their domiciles and it keeps rotating.

- Staff meeting: This is an internal meeting putting together the Wings To Fly Initiative managers and Staff volunteers to meditate, plan and re-plan the projects/program activities for easy implementation. Challenges are addressed, opportunities and potential opportunities are identified to inform the new plan.

- Project evaluation: At the end of each term, we have a culture of organizing the internal evaluation meeting since it helps us compile a clear and comprehensive report that we share to our key stakeholders and orient our project/program and activities.

4. Why this project is important?

This project is important considering its huge impact, life transformation and change of negative perspectives of people in Kakuma it has had. We have collected signal of change stories and this tells us how much this is gradually supporting our community. There is a report of behavior change, confidence in communication and employment.
